The Power of Positivity
Oct 27, 2021Let me tell you why your words (audible and internal) have the power to change your hormones and your body.
I've been more stressed than normal. My husband is changing jobs, we moved out of our rent home, Plus One is making some changes, I still feel I'm adjusting to motherhood, and I'm pregnant with our second little one.
During one of my spiritual direction sessions with Julie Currier, she encouraged me to actively do more things that make me feel fun and creative. One of those suggestions was to wear something that feels more "me" at some point each week. Lately, it's been my coral headband or white dress (until the weather turned chilly).
I had a similar conversation with a client earlier this week. She was experiencing pelvic pain and incontinence and having a hard time managing the stress that comes with those things - on top of the major stressors in her external world as well. I encouraged her to say nice things to herself ever time she began to feel overwhelmed a dip into that fear cycle. I had her compliment her hair or her smile or remind herself of something awesome she did that day.
See, when we get caught in those negative thought traps, we prevent our body from feeling the "good vibe" hormones like oxytocin. We let the stress and pain and symptoms build and build until they become real problems. If we can break that cycle with positive thoughts, words, clothing choices, and adventures, we can help our body thrive instead of being weighed down with tension.
So, give it a try. Say three nice things to yourself right now. Out loud, if you can! And then plan something for the next week that will make you feel creative or quirky or just downright fun. Let me know what you decide!
