Physically and Emotionally Releasing Pelvic Tension

pain pelvic health trauma womens health Mar 06, 2024

Some people experience pain. Some just feel clogged or stuck. Some have pain with sex, leaking, or constipation. Some feel like their organs are going to fall out. Some have trouble with their back or hips.

These are just a handful of the many ways pelvic tension can show up in your body.

Physically releasing tension usually starts with breathwork, posture, and habits.

  • For example, when you inhale, can you feel that breath expand into your low back or pelvic floor? If not, that might be a good place to start.
  • Is it hard for you to take a deep breath? If so, working on diaphragm strength could be the first step.
  • What about your posture? Do you squeeze your glutes, anus, hips, or abs when you're standing still?
  • Check your gripping when you drive or are seated as well. Common places are the inner thighs, hip flexors, abs, and shoulders.

Changing the amount of tension your body holds can be as straightforward as changing your habits. Notice I didn't use the words "simple" or "easy".

You may not be surprised to hear that "stuck" emotions often show up in the pelvis. It's such a core area of our being, responsible for sexual function, childbearing and birth, not to mention core strength, bowel and bladder function.

There are some more apparent reasons why someone might benefit from doing emotional work around their pelvic area, such as sexual abuse, birth, Cesarean or other scarring, and purity culture. But the list most certainly does not stop there. Emotions can affect our pelvis that have seemingly little or nothing to do with that area, so don't discount this factor if you have never experienced those events.

So what do we do with emotions that are showing up in the pelvis?

Often we start with learning to connect and communicate with our bodies. Most of us have one or two ways we hear our body, but we want to expand and add to those channels as much as possible.

Manual therapy techniques and movement can also help with both the physical and emotional aspects of pelvic tension. This is just one reason working with someone in-person can be a game-changer.

We strive to identify the root cause of the pelvic tension - whether emotional, physical, or usually a combination of the two. Whatever you may be feeling in your body, wherever you might be in your pelvic journey, I encourage you to not stop pursuing your healing.
